At the same time, the material is increasingly discussed in the context of biodegradability, circularity, and the bioeconomy. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"351\" data-end=\"498\">At first glance, this may seem contradictory. How can a material designed to last a long time also be biodegradable? <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"843\">In this issue, produced together with <strong data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"564\">Elisabetta Scaglia<\/strong>, Head of Environmental Services at <strong data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"629\">UNIC \u2013 Concerie Italiane<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"635\" data-end=\"657\">Dietrich Tegtmeyer<\/strong>, freelance leather consultant, we clear up common misunderstandings and explain\u2014in a clear and evidence-based way\u2014how durability and biodegradability can coexist in leather.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"845\" data-end=\"848\">\n<h1 data-section-id=\"1f4bnyt\" data-start=\"850\" data-end=\"872\">Understanding the basics<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"1012\">When it comes to leather, durability and biodegradability are not opposites. They operate on different timescales and under different conditions. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1014\" data-end=\"1315\">Leather is made from animal hides and skins, which are rich in <strong data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1082\">collagen<\/strong>\u2014a natural, bio-based protein structure. When leather is used in consumer products, this allows the products to be used for many years, reducing waste and preventing products from being discarded prematurely. <\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"1986\">\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1izqlc6\" data-start=\"1988\" data-end=\"2034\">Tanning chemistry and biodegradability:<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2059\">Clearing up misunderstandings<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2295\">One of the most common misconceptions is that tanning uses so many chemicals that leather must subsequently be \u201csealed\u201d with a heavy plastic-based finish\u2014which in practice would turn leather into plastic. This is incorrect. <\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"qaok2i\" data-start=\"2297\" data-end=\"2317\">What tanning does<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2885\">\u2022 cross-links the collagen fibres using vegetable, mineral or synthetic tanning agents depending on the end product (shoes, bags, gloves, furniture, etc.)<br data-start=\"2477\" data-end=\"2480\">\u2022 improves resistance to heat, moisture and mechanical stress thanks to selected functional chemicals<br data-start=\"2591\" data-end=\"2594\">\u2022 by definition, a surface coating or finish applied to protect leather must not be thicker than <strong data-start=\"2708\" data-end=\"2719\">0.15 mm<\/strong>. If it is thicker, the material must be called <strong data-start=\"2764\" data-end=\"2780\">coated leather<\/strong>, and even in such cases the coating must not exceed <strong data-start=\"2837\" data-end=\"2884\">one third of the material\u2019s total thickness<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1j7150s\" data-start=\"2887\" data-end=\"2912\">What tanning does not do<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"3038\">\u2022 it does not turn leather into a synthetic material<br data-start=\"2969\" data-end=\"2972\">\u2022 it does not remove the material\u2019s natural protein-based structure<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3040\" data-end=\"3312\">It is true that the leather surface needs protection after tanning to enable long-term use, and in many cases, this is done with a synthetic layer. However, this layer is very thin (<strong data-start=\"3226\" data-end=\"3237\">&lt;150 \u00b5m<\/strong>). Therefore, normally <strong data-start=\"3262\" data-end=\"3311\">less than 5% of leather in use consists of plastic<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3314\" data-end=\"3577\">As a result, a sustainable leather today contains <strong data-start=\"3366\" data-end=\"3402\">over 90% bio-based materials<\/strong>, despite the use of chemicals and protective surface layers. But for leather to break down\u2014like other natural materials (for example, wood)\u2014the right conditions are required, which normally do not occur during use. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4444\" data-end=\"4551\">The rate of degradation depends heavily on environmental conditions and the presence of suitable microorganisms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4553\" data-end=\"4675\">What varies is <strong data-start=\"4573\" data-end=\"4606\">how quickly the degradation occurs<\/strong>, depending on which tanning and finishing chemistry is used.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4677\" data-end=\"4847\">Biodegradation does not occur while leather is in use, as the necessary conditions\u2014prolonged moisture, microbial activity, temperature, and oxygen\u2014are usually absent.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4849\" data-end=\"5060\">When the leather reaches the end of its life cycle, however, these conditions can enable biodegradation.
